Don’t forget to Spring Forward today! Happy Daylight Savings! Phoenix Moving has recently helped clients move across country from NWA to West Virginia and even Washington DC. During our moving consultations with clients, we discussed several tips to ensure their moves were as hassle-free and seamless as possible. Long distance moves are a big deal - making sure to prepare is extremely important!

Let’s assume you and your family are moving due to a job change that requires a move to another state. Here are several tips to ensure your cross-country move is as stress-free as possible:

  1. Think about your needs and budget for the move - things such as:

    a. Are you and your family able to pack or need someone to do that for you?

    b. Do you need a vehicle or related personal item moved?

    c. Are you bringing your refrigerator, washer, dryer, and appliances with you?

    d. Would you like your home to be staged with furniture?

    e. Are you driving or flying to the new state?

  2. Request moving estimates and a move consultation from local, highly rated movers like Phoenix Moving.

  3. Select a mover, confirm that the moving company carries proper insurance and is DOT authorized, and read and agree to the move contract. Then, schedule a moving date with the movers.

  4. Work with your realtor (in the state you are moving to) to determine:

    a. If your bank is located there

    b. What utility providers are in the area

    c. What school districts, churches, and post offices are in the area

    d. Where are hospitals and vets within the area

    e. How to register a vehicle + are there personal property taxes in the area

    f. Does your insurance agent serve the new area? Get quotes for autos, homes, and other items insured

  5. Make a list of companies that you need to call to update your change of address.

  6. Take an inventory of your personal property including large, bulky items, motorized items, yard equipment, and anything else you will be taking with you on the move.

  7. Right before the move, go to your local post office or go online to submit a forward of address from your old address to your new one.

  8. Packing:

    a. If you are packing your belongings, make sure to have the proper packing materials and label every box. To ensure a safe and damage-free move, boxes must be packed properly. Dishes must be packed in dish boxes with layers of paper. Usually, you can purchase moving materials from your moving company. Phoenix Moving sells those, if needed.

    b. If you are having a moving company pack up your stuff, pack your personal items that you use everyday and any items that are private. Label the boxes and place those with the items you will be traveling with.

  9. Make the journey to your new home! The movers will unload your personal property at your new home. If you purchased staging services, the moving company will also put furniture together, stage large items, and place boxes in the appropriate room.

  10. Contact the vendors on the list that you made to change address (and phone number if applicable), setup insurance, setup banking, register vehicles, start utilities, etc. Don’t forget about these items for the old house - those will need to cancelled.
