Thanksgiving Tips
Thanksgiving is days away and it is time to make sure you have everything in order to enjoy the day to the fullest! Whether you are hosting or visiting with family, we have tips to make sure this Thanksgiving holiday is one filled with fun, family, and of course, deliciousness.
Holiday Plan:
Are you hosting this year? Responsible for activities and fun? Saying this year's prayer of thanks? Picking up groceries? Whatever your roll is, it’s best not to put off your preparation until the last minute. Hosts obviously have the most on their plate, but everyone else should consider what they can do to help make the day enjoyable for the whole family. Start by checking in with everyone and making a prep plan. Start now, and things will be much smoother the day of.
Table Setting Inspiration:
While the tree is the focus of Christmas, the table is the festive marker for Thanksgiving. Decorating your table will help set the holiday tone for the day. Southern Living has table inspiration for all styles from cozy country to sleek minimalist. And the best part about table settings is that you can do it ahead of time. Pick your decor and settings and lay it all out the night before. You’ll be able to check the first Thanksgiving task off your list before the day even begins.
Cook Ahead of Schedule:
If having something checked off your list the night before sounds good to you, then you are really going to like this advice. There are plenty of Thanksgiving dishes that you can cook in the days leading up to the event. Turkey cooks well the day before, undressed salads in a ziplock don’t take up much fridge space, and most casseroles are just as good (if not better) up to a few days later. If you have the option to cook in the days before, do it! And spend more time hanging with your Thanksgiving people on the actual day. Check out more make-ahead recipes from Better Homes and Gardens.
Day of Festivities:
Although Thanksgiving is big on food, it's not the only important part of the day. Obviously spending the morning watching the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade is a must, and a friendly game of flag football always goes over well. But those aren’t the only turkey day activities you can the fam can enjoy! This list from The Spruce has games for the brainiacs and the competitive, maybe one of these will become your family’s new tradition!
Appetizers:
The main dishes of Thanksgiving are pretty similar across households. But the appetizers are where things can get a little crazy. If your family are late eaters, it is definitely a good idea to have something for people to snack on throughout the day. These tasty bites will inspire your creativity and have everyone asking for your recipe. Don’t make too many though, you don’t want everyone to completely fill up before the main meal!
Give Thanks:
No Thanksgiving is complete without a pre-meal prayer or moment of thanks. And how ever you chose to show gratitude is great, but if you are looking for new ideas, inspirational words, or prayers to guide your message we have some great sources for you. Perhaps you prefer to ground yourself in knowledge of this special day. If that's the case, we highly recommend this article on gratitude and thanks, thanksgiving is a year-round practice.
Movies:
When dinner is done, the best way to wind down the day is with a festive movie. You could jump right into Christmas movies, but you would be doing yourself a disservice - there are fantastic Thanksgiving movies that you are missing! Hear us out and check out some of these classics… and then kick off Friday with a Christmas movie.
Leftovers:
Do not let those leftovers go to waste! Be prepared and buy gallon zip locks and send everyone home with pieces of the meal to enjoy over the next week. Or you can get creative and whip up some new meals with staples you’ve made extra of. Obviously, turkey soup and sandwiches are old standbys - deservedly so - but that doesn't mean you can’t get creative with a left overs ham quiche or sweet potato soup. Get more ideas here!
