Spring Cleaning During a Move
It’s spring which means it’s time for Spring Cleaning - especially if you are about to move or have just arrived in your new home. There are a couple of ways to approach spring cleaning during this crazy time of packing and unpacking. Some people prefer to dive in with a blank slate (when everything is moved out) and knock it all out in one day, while others prefer to take their time and get things done little by little. If you’re looking for cleaning and planning tips check out our advice for that in our blog.
If You’re a “Blank-Slate” Kind of Person
If you prefer to get the majority of your cleaning done on the day of your move, you’ll want to make sure you are ready to dive in headfirst. Have all your supplies and equipment purchased and set to the side so that you won’t have to make any stops to find cleaning supplies or that pesky dustpan that manages to always disappear.
One thing we suggest you do ahead of time is dust all your furniture. The last thing you want to do is bring all your old dust into your new house. In the days before your movers come, use a microfiber cloth or Swiffer to dust high and low. Brush it onto the flood - if you don’t mind leaving it for a day until your deep clean, then just leave it!
Once everything is moved out, now is your time to (make your house) shine. Clean the bathroom and kitchen - don’t forget the cabinets, walls, and appliances. Dust and clean the walls, baseboards, and cabinets. Clean the windows (inside and out). Sweep and vacuum and then mop all your hard floors. Sanitize and get that grime out. Work from high to low finishing with the floors.
If Your Mantra is “Steady Pace Wins the Race”
You have two options. You can either go room by room, or by cleaning activity. We suggest room by room for people who feel motivated by seeing a finished product; a finished room will be your inspiration to move onto the next one the following cleaning day. Activity by activity is best for those who don’t want to pull out each set of cleaning supplies more than once. You can start with your dusting day, moving from one room to the next (dusting from high to low). Starting with the ceiling fan and moving down to the baseboards. You may also want to vacuum on dusting day. Windows can be another day. The next can be scrubbing surfaces down (like appliances, toilets, showers, and even furniture scuffs). Check out advice here for a smarter way to clean your home using this step-by-step process.
For Everyone
Regardless of how you choose to tackle cleaning, we suggest you incorporate clearing out unwanted belongings into your packing process. Make a donation box and give it to a local charity or donation center. You can also use old bedding and towels as padding in your boxes or around your furniture - just be sure to wash it all once you get to your new place.
Hopefully, your new home has been cared for and cleaned, but if not you’ll want to repeat this process in your new place. Luckily you’ll have already cleaned your belongings, so you’ll only have to clean the house itself this time around.
